How do I know which charter school is a good match for my child?

*Here are some questions you can ask the staff at a charter school*

Goals:

What are the goals of this school? What strategies are you using to accomplish those goals?

Standards:

What standards does the school have for each grade? Can you provide some examples of what will be taught in my child’s grade? Does the school offer challenging work for all students, or just a select-few? Does what’s being taught in the school match with New Jersey’s standards?

Teachers:

What are the backgrounds of the teachers in this school? How does the school measure and reward teacher success? What is done about teachers who do not meet the school’s expectations?

Miscellaneous:

How is this school different from other public schools in the district? What is the culture and environment of the school like? Does it fit my child's needs? How many students have left to attend other schools (student mobility rate)? Will the school be in this same location next year? What is the school's financial situation like and it's longer-term viability? Has the school eve been on probation?
